Things of the Internet: IoT explained
The ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) is a phrase with which one cannot help but be familiar, as it has gained increasing ubiquity throughout the twenty first century. But many of us have a poorly-formed idea of what IoT actually means. The term is broad and ill-defined in colloquial use. If we are laypeople and not technical experts, we may conjure a vague mental image of LG’s 2000 internet refrigerator, or of the autonomous self-driving cars that nobody has quite invented just yet. The purpose of this paper is to explain how the Internet of Things is positioned in the technology landscape today, and in the future: what it is, where it began, how the technology is used, and where it might be headed.
